Humidifier Sale Now On – April Aire 500 Installed for $395.00

Weiss-Johnson’s whole-home humidifiers will help you avoid dry air, preventing health issues and home damages. Several types of humidifiers are available each with their own pros and cons so which one is right for you and your home ?

*

The three main types of whole home humidifiers are Drum , Flow Through and Steam. Selecting the right one depends on what you are trying to accomplish and how much effort you want to put into keeping the humidity in your home at a healthy and non damaging level.

*

Drum Humidifiers

These humidifiers were the first whole home humidifiers and are popular even today. In a drum humidifier an absorptive pad surrounds a drum that slowly circulates through a water pan at the bottom of the unit. When your thermostat calls for additional humidity the pan fills with water, the drum moves and humidity is circulated through you home when your furnace is in a heating cycle. When the furnace stops the heating cycle, the drum stops spinning but the water in the pan will continue to provide humidity to your home as it evaporates.

Drum Humidifier Benefits

Cost – Usually less expensive than a flow through or steam humidifier and uses less water

Humidity –  Provides humidity to your home outside of the heating cycle for a short period of time as the water in the holding tray evaporates

Drum Humidifier Disadvantages

Maintenance – Require cleaning at least twice a year due to accumulation of slime, calcium or mildew in water tray

Humidity – Only operates during a heating cycle so raising whole home humidity can take days instead of hours

Popularity – These are not very popular due to having standing water and the maintenance required. They are used in only 5% of our installations

*

Flow Through Humidifiers

These are by far our most popular humidifiers. Available in various sizes they are able to provide virtually any size home with an average humidity requirement the correct amount of humidity. As the name suggests, these humidifiers do not have a holding pan to retain water, rather the water flows from the top, through an absorptive pad with the excess draining out the bottom. Water flows through the pad if humidity is called for by the thermostat during the heating cycle, once the heating cycle is complete the remaining water that has been absorbed by the pad continues to provide humidity to your home. There is far less water retained in the pad than their is in a holding tray of a drum humidifier so the residual evaporation does not take long or provide a lot of benefit.

*

Flow Through Humidifier Benefits

Maintenance – No moving parts or motors to break down, extremely reliable.

Cleaning – Cleaning is as simple as removing the absorptive pad once a year and replacing it. No standing water or slime to deal with

Humidity- For a short time after the heating cycle, humidity continues to be added to your home

*

Flow Through Humidifier Disadvantages

Water – Uses more water than a drum humidifier as water flows through the pad instead of the pad circulating through a tray of water

Popularity – These are  very popular due to ease of maintenance and are used in 90% of our installations.

*

Steam Humidifiers

*

Steam humidifiers work fast and are not reliant on your furnace being in a heating cycle. As soon as your thermostat calls for humidity, steam is created and humidity is added to your home. Humidity can be brought up to a comfortable level in a matter of hours rather than days. In most homes with an average amount of hardwood floors and wooden furniture a steam humidifier is overkill. However, If a home has a great deal of wood floors and furniture including valuable antiques or the homeowner has difficulty breathing in dry air then a steam humidifier will solve all humidity issues quickly.

*

Steam Humidifier Benefits

Humidity – Instant humidity regardless of whether the furnace is in a heat cycle or fan only mode

Effectiveness – Brings a homes humidity level up quickly and maintains it without traditional drop offs during non heat cycle.

*

Steam Humidifier Disadvantages

Cost – These units can cost 3 to 4 times that of a standard flow through humidifier and have a more technical installation requirement

Maintenance- Maintenance is easy BUT expensive as the water filtration cartridge will need to be changed once a year and a full cleaning/ descaling is required

Popularity – Due to the additional cost of the unit and maintenance requirement, Steam humidifiers are only used in 5% of our installations
