5 Helpful Steps to Prepare for a Water Heater Installation

Ready to replace your water heater? Before installation day arrives, you may be wondering what steps you can take to make installation as smooth as possible. If so, you’ve come to the right place. In this short blog with Weiss-Johnson, we’ll share the best ways you can prepare for your Edmonton water heater installation and keep it stress-free. Let’s dive in.

#1: Clear a Path

During your Edmonton water heater installation, your technician will likely need to make several trips outside to gather different tools, parts, and equipment. It’s all a part of the job to keep things running smoothly. Once your new water heater is installed, they’ll also haul away for old one for you. Make it easier for them by ensuring there’s a completely clear path between your home’s utility room and the outside. This includes hallways, stairs, entrances, and exits free of obstructions. Your technician will appreciate it!

#2: Declutter Around the Heater Location

A standard 50-gallon water tank heater can stand 4 to 5 feet tall and nearly 2 feet wide. That’s roughly the same size as a tall mini-fridge! During your Edmonton water heater installation, your old and new heaters will both be in the same space for some time. To make the process easier for your technician, be sure the areas around the heater are clutter-free and easily accessible. Clear away any storage items like paint cans, boxes, or seasonal decorations. Aim for a clearance of at least three feet around the installation area.

#3: Plan For a Few Hours Without Hot Water

You may be asking, “Will I completely lose hot water, and if so, for how long?”  The answer is yes, you should expect to be without hot water during your Edmonton water heater installation. When a new water heater is being installed, your technician will shut off the cold water valve that feeds water to the heater. Until the new water heater is connected, you won’t have any water. Filling a water jug in advance will allow for small uses like making coffee while the tank is being replaced. Plan ahead by scheduling your showers, laundry, dishwashing, and other housework using water either before or after installation.

#4: Be Present

So, you might wonder if being without hot water means you can step out for a few hours. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. It’s important that you or someone you trust remain home during your Edmonton water heater installation. This is so you’ll be able to provide access to any areas the technician may need to access. In most cases, your technician will need access to the utility room and the main water shutoff valve, though access to other areas may sometimes be needed as well.

As well, sometimes unexpected fixes come up, like a failing shutoff valve or venting issue. While these fixes are relatively common and routine for technicians, your presence will still be needed to understand the situation and approve of any decisions.

#5: Keep Pets & Kids Away

Edmonton water heater installations involve no shortage of potential safety risks. From hot pipes to gas lines, the installation area is one that only HVAC professionals are equipped to be around. Keep your loved ones safe and out of harm’s way. Make sure both children and pets are secured in a separate area until the installation is complete and all equipment is removed.
